Linseed oil is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and is particularly rich in the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Fresh grass contains a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids, but a diet consisting of grains contains relatively high levels of omega-6 fatty acids. Horses with little or no access to pasture and high amounts of concentrate feed therefore often receive a disproportionately high amount of omega-6. Omega-6 plays a role in the regulation of inflammation. An excess of omega-6 fatty acids can disrupt this regulation. In such cases, it is important to restore the balance of the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. Linseed oil is therefore highly suitable for rebalancing the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in a diet.

In addition to fatty acids, linseed oil naturally contains vitamin E and tryptophan, as well as various minerals such as iron, copper, and magnesium. Linseed oil helps to soothe mucous membranes and plays a role in maintaining healthy skin and a shiny coat.
